The Two Traps: Karns Middle and Hardin Valley Middle

Karns Middle doesn't always mean Karns High. About 86% of Karns Middle homes go on to Karns High. The other 14%, in the Ball Camp Elementary zone, go to Hardin Valley Academy. That includes Chips Crossing, Summer Place, Waynesboro, Jenkins Creek, Richland Colony, Canby Hills, Landmark, Andes Hill, Westop, Hawks Landing, Coventry and Brentwood.

And it works the other way too. Part of the Mill Creek Elementary zone goes to Hardin Valley Middle, then Karns High. That includes Reagan Landing, Highgate, Coward Mill, Burchfield Heights, Terra Vista, Hardin Fields, Magnolia Pointe and Pellissippi Village.

So the middle school name alone won't tell you the high school. Always check the exact address with the Knox County Schools zone search before you write an offer.

No change to the Karns High boundary has been announced, but some lines inside it change in 2027–28:

  • Powell Elementary rezoning: On March 5, 2026, the Knox County Board of Education voted to move about 300 students out of overcrowded Powell Elementary, starting in the 2027–28 school year. Belltown moves to Karns Elementary (it stays zoned for Karns High), Amherst Elementary takes some Powell Elementary students too, and the Powell Middle and Karns Middle lines get adjusted. Students can stay at their current school through its last grade, with parents providing transportation. See our Powell High School Zone guide for details.
  • Mill Creek Elementary opened in 2023 to take students from Karns, Hardin Valley and Ball Camp Elementary. Since then, Karns Elementary has had room: about 200 open seats as of spring 2026, according to Knox County Schools' budget presentation.
  • A new K-8 school at the former Rule High site is in the Knox County Schools capital plan. It could draw from Northwest Middle, but its zones haven't been set. If you're in the Northwest Middle part of the Karns zone, keep an eye on it.
